Iolanta, Op. 69

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's opera Iolanta takes us on a journey through time, immersing us in the extraordinary world of the courts of southern France in the 15th century. We find ourselves in Occitania, the land of courtly love! This opera depicts the love story between Iolanta, the daughter of René, the King of Provence, and the brave knight Vaudémont. Several obstacles stand in the way of their love: on one hand, the arranged marriage between the princess and Duke Robert, Vaudémont's best friend; on the other hand, Iolanta's blindness, the nature of which she is unaware. In fact, Iolanta was raised by her father in isolation from the world, locked away in a secret fortress to protect her from the suffering her disability could cause. One day, Vaudémont joins her in her seclusion and notices that she is unable to distinguish between the white and red roses in her garden. He reveals her blindness to her and describes what colors and light are, unveiling a world that was previously unknown to her.

Tchaikovsky's final work (premiered in 1892) thus becomes a hymn to the power of love, capable of going beyond appearances and touching the deepest essence of things and souls. As Shakespeare wrote, especially about roses: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." With its magnificent score and profound plot, Tchaikovsky's opera Iolanta moves us and encourages us to reflect on the true essence of love and beauty, beyond superficial distinctions.
