And to think that Dvořák considered this instrument to be insufficient for a solo concerto, only suitable for the orchestra! He changed his mind in the US, after listening to another concerto by Victor Herbert (who had also been the principal cellist in Dvořák’s New World Symphony), which could also have inspired Dvořák’s choice of key in his own concerto.
