Discover Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma, a defining masterpiece of bel canto, on medici.tv!
Premiered at La Scala in Milan on December 26, 1831, Norma is a two-act tragic opera by Vincenzo Bellini, with a libretto by Felice Romani inspired by Norma ou l’Infanticide, a play by French writer Alexandre Soumet. Bellini himself conducted the premiere, with soprano Giuditta Pasta in the title role and Giulia Grisi appearing as Adalgisa.
Set in Roman-occupied Gaul around 50 BCE, the opera follows Norma, the high priestess of the Druids and daughter of chieftain Oroveso, who has broken her vows of chastity to pursue a secret relationship with Roman proconsul Pollione, with whom she has two children. When he falls in love with the young vestal virgin Adalgisa, Norma is torn between fury, grief, and jealousy. Rather than killing her children, Norma decides to go to the stake and confess her sins to the Gauls after unsuccessfully pleading with Pollione to leave Adalgisa. Upon hearing of her public confession, Pollione is moved by her courage and sacrifice, ultimately choosing to join her in death. The role of Norma, with its famous aria “Casta dive,” is widely held as one of the most challenging in the soprano repertoire due to its demand for both bel canto vocal agility and the dramatic intensity of a tragic heroine.
Challenging Creation and Enduring Triumph
Norma is the ninth of Bellini’s eleven operas, composed between August and November 1831 to fulfill a commission placed the previous year by impresario Alessandro Lanari. Rehearsals, which began in early December, proved to be difficult: Giuditta Pasta found the extraordinary vocal demands of the title role daunting, while tenor Domenico Donzelli had to learn Pollione’s part on short notice. Although met with a lukewarm reception at its premiere, the opera quickly won over audiences. By its fourth performance, Norma witnessed a success that only grew thanks to legendary performers such as Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, and Montserrat Caballé, and remains a key title in the standard repertoire today.
