Discover Khovanshchina, Mussorgsky’s beloved musical drama, on medici.tv!

Khovanshchina is one of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s most popular operas. Just as he had done for his earlier masterpiece Boris Godunov, Khovanshchina features a libretto written by Modest Mussorgsky himself. With the support of his friend Vladimir Stasov, Mussorgsky drew on historical documents to bring the Sreltsy uprising of 1682 to life: set in 17th-century Russia at the dawn of Peter the Great’s rise to power, the nation is torn between advocates of reform and the Old Believers, who fiercely defend Orthodox practices. Tangled up in the political drama is Prince Ivan Khovansky, leader of the Streltsy, who joins forces with Prince Vasily Golitsyn and Dosifei, the spiritual leader of the Old Believers. Together they plot a coup to seize power until boyar Shaklovity uncovers their treachery, leading to the grand finale of mass self-immolation among the Old Believers, who choose to die rather than submit to the new order.

Unfinished, yet continually reimagined

Mussorgsky began composing Khovanshchina in 1872, but work on the opera stretched on for nearly a decade due to other projects and the composer’s personal struggles. As a result, the score remained unfinished after Mussorgsky’s death in 1881. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov reorchestrated the opera and finally published it in 1883 with a premiere in Saint Petersburg on February 21, 1886. In 1913, nearly three decades later, renowned impresario Sergei Diaghilev sought a version that remained closer to Mussorgsky’s original writing for a Paris production. He entrusted Maurice Ravel with the opera’s reorchestration, while Igor Stravinsky reworked the striking final chorus. In 1960, Dmitri Shostakovich proposed yet another orchestration. Widely regarded as more faithful to Mussorgsky’s musical language than its predecessors, this version remains most often heard in opera houses around the world.

Although Khovanshchina has long been overshadowed by Boris Godunov’s immense success, it is nonetheless one of the crowning achievements of Russian opera: thanks to its intense choral writing, rich orchestration, and unique blend of severity and mysticism, Khovanshchina merits its place among the greatest works of the operatic repertoire.
