Tchaikovsky’s last three symphonies can be interpreted as a tryptic joined together by a red thread: the idea of human impotence in the face of destiny. Symphony No. 4, in particular, is characterized by the theme of fatum, which sets up a musical meditation upon the meaning of human life (or even the apparent absence of its meaning). Premiered on 10 February 1878 in Moscow under the baton of Nikolaï Rubinstein, this symphony did not witness the success that was expected. However, it was played a few months later in St. Petersburg, where the public even called for an encore. From this moment onwards, Symphony No. 4 has become one of the most popular works of Tchaikovsky and the symphonic repertoire more generally.

“None of my compositions ever caused me so much pain, but I never felt that much love for any of my other compositions” wrote Tchaikovsky in one of his letters, regarding his Symphony No. 4. In fact, commenting on the first movement of his symphony, the composer defines fatum as “a force of destiny that prohibits us from enjoying happiness, that jealously guards over our joy and fulfillment, so that they are never pure, neat, without shades. It is a force that hangs over our heads like the Sword of Damocles [...]”.
