Though Vincenzo Bellini’s La Sonnambula is much less tragic than Shakespeare, its twists and turns are no less surprising! Compared to the queen of Scotland’s malevolence, Bellini presents a much more innocent and pastoral subject, but the idyll quickly falls apart when Amina, the miller, begins to wander through the village in the deepest sleep. Blurring the lines between imagination and reality, Bellini’s opera, with Felice Romani’s masterful Italian libretto, offers ethereal and dreamy arias, such as the legendary “Ah! Non credea mirarti” (“I had not thought I would see you!”) The aria is so beautiful that it is said that Maria Callas, in the main role at the Scala in Milan, was called to stage 23 times!
