The St. Matthew Passion, or in its original Latin title, Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Evangelistam Matthæum, is a religious oratorio by J.S. Bach. First performed on Good Friday in the year 1727, the work was subsequently revised until 1736, resulting in a total of three versions. With a monumental duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes, Bach's St. Matthew Passion undoubtedly ranks among the great compositions of Baroque music. Alongside the shorter St. John Passion, which involves only one choir, it is part of Bach's unfinished project to write four Passions corresponding to the four evangelists' accounts of the final moments of Jesus Christ's life, particularly the Crucifixion.

Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, is written for two solo voices, a double choir, and two orchestras. Inspired by Lutheranism, the composition is characterized by its simplicity and sobriety, with the voices of the characters resonating as if they were actors on a theatrical stage. In his St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, Bach's mastery is reflected in the realism of its portrayal: the cries of the crowd are dissonant and irregular, the flagellation of Christ is mimicked by a violent motif of the violins, and Jesus' recitatives are accompanied by all the string instruments of the orchestra, as if it were the entire host of angels speaking with him.
