#mediciverbier10 – Paavo Järvi makes a very welcome return to the Verbier Festival, joining Leonidas Kavakos and Alexander Buzlov on the stage of the Salle des Combins. He conducts the Verbier Festival Orchestra in an outstanding programme featuring music by Debussy, Brahms and Prokofiev.

The concert begins with Iberia, the most popular of the three orchestral Images composed by Claude Debussy between 1905 and 1912 and inspired by impressions of Spain. Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello follows. Written in 1887 for Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausmann, it was his last concertante work.

The concert concludes with Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, the most popular and widely performed of the composer’s symphonies. It was written during the Second World War and intended as “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit."
