Sobre el programa...

The marvelous Marin Alsop takes the helm of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for a program of modern flair and Romantic passion: contemporary Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz's Antrópolis and Rimsky-Korsakov's endlessly evocative Scheherazade! Stay tuned at the intermission as well for a fascinating conversation between Alsop and DSO president Kim Noltemy.

Ortiz's brassy Antrópolis opens the evening in irresistibly percussive fashion, giving the DSO's timpanist a golden opportunity to demonstrate the irrepressible power of rhythmic motifs and shifts. The concert's second half is then given over to the beloved symphonic suite Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, a musical distillation of the One Thousand and One Nights in four indelible movements, full of some of the most memorable melodies ever composed, with a side of swashbuckling adventure and swooning romance.
