Aida is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, inspired by a plot proposed by French archaeologist Auguste Mariette. The work was commissioned to Verdi by the Egyptian khedive, Ismail Pasha, in honor of the opening of the Suez Canal. Verdi was the first choice of the Ottoman governor who, in the event of rejection, would have written to Charles Gounod or Richard Wagner. We will never know what these composers would have written, as Verdi responded positively and conceived what would become one of the most well-known and beloved operas in the history of operatic song!
