About
Founded in 2004 by the Bamberg Symphony in collaboration with Marina Mahler, granddaughter of Gustav Mahler, The Mahler Competition has become one of the world’s leading conducting competitions and a renowned platform for the next generation of orchestral conductors. Held every three years in Bamberg, Germany, the competition is dedicated to the artistic spirit of Gustav Mahler and brings together exceptional young talents from across the globe.
Over the past two decades, the competition has launched the international careers of conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Lahav Shani, Kahchun Wong, Finnegan Downie Dear, and Giuseppe Mengoli. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious stepping stones for emerging conductors.
A distinctive feature of The Mahler Competition is that candidates work with the full Bamberg Symphony throughout all rounds of the competition. The international jury follows every stage in person, evaluating not only the public performances but also the candidates’ rehearsal technique, communication skills, musical insight, and artistic personality.
The 2026 edition marks the eighth Mahler Competition and brings together 24 conductors from around the world. After several elimination rounds, three finalists will rehearse and perform with the Bamberg Symphony in the final concerts, broadcast live from Bamberg. The winner receives a first prize of €30,000 as well as long-term artistic support and conducting engagements with the orchestra.
More than a competition, The Mahler Competition is a meeting place for emerging artists and established figures of the international music world — a showcase of the future of conducting.
