Program notes

Unstoppable operatic duo, Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel and American soprano Nadine Sierra, take to the iconic stage of Covent Garden's Royal Opera House for Gaetano Donizetti’s beloved opera buffa L’Elisir d’amore! Sierra makes her Royal Opera debut in this hilarious and touching audience favorite, with Donizetti’s timeless score conducted by Sesto Quatrini.

Donizetti’s melodrama tells the story of a humble peasant, Nemorino (Avetisyan), who tries — in vain — to win the heart of the proud Adina (Sierra). To achieve his goal, he asks the bombastic Doctor Dulcamara (Terfel) for help, who gives him a powerful love potion. Venture into Laurent Pelly’s vivid staging to find out what this magical elixir has in store…
