Program notes

The legendary Ludwig van Beethoven’s sole opera dazzles at Covent Garden in this 2020 production! Sir Antonio Pappano conducts a brilliant musical ensemble of musicians and singers featuring tenor David Butt Philip (Florestan) and the soprano Lise Davidsen (Leonore).

When Florestan is taken as a political prisoner, his wife Leonore ーdisguised as a man named Fidelio ー courageously sets out to rescue him. German director Tobias Kratzer does justice to both the work’s captivating drama and the unforgettable arias. Fidelio is an opera full of hope, celebrating the strength of the human spirit under political oppression. Whether in 1805 Vienna or 21st-century London, this moving story will always find its audience.
