Program notes

The irresistible Cecilia Bartoli leads an all-star cast in Rossini’s most renowned opera buffa! Filmed live at the Schwetzinger Festspiele, Michael Hampe’s 1988 production of Il Barbiere di Siviliglia strikes the perfect balance between irrepressible exuberance, lighthearted comedy, and high caliber artistry. Music director Gabriele Ferro leads the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart in Rossini’s carbonated masterwork of a score, composed in barely three weeks when he was only 24 years old (though already on his seventeenth opera)! A superlative interpretation of Rossini’s endlessly-entertaining tale of love, greed, and comic hijinx.
