Program notes
Join a world-renowned cast — including Jonas Kaufmann, Elīna Garanča, and Ludovic Tézier — and conductor Philippe Jordan for a stunning Kirill Serebrennikov production of Wagner’s epic Parsifal on the magnificent stage of the Vienna State Opera!
With a large list of operatic masterpieces already behind him, Wagner concluded his extraordinary career with Parsifal, a spectacular medieval fantasy based on Arthurian legend. This “sacred stage festival” recounts the journey of Parsifal, a pure-hearted young man who sets out to find the Holy Spear and, after a series of initiatory trials, becomes a Christ-like figure who himself brings salvation to the castle of Montsalvat.
The bold Kirill Serebrennikov’s modern and realistic staging takes place in a prison, where the brutal decor amplifies the tale's inherent violence and emotional intensity. Parsifal is embodied by the renowned lyric tenor Jonas Kaufmann, and Parsifal’s younger self by actor Nikolay Sidorenko. Alongside Kaufmann, Elīna Garanča delivers a sensational performance as the seductive but deceitful Kundry, and Ludovic Tézier masterfully portrays Amfortas, a ruler overwhelmed by his tragic destiny. Stefan Cerny, Georg Zeppenfeld, and Wolfgang Koch complete the five-star cast of this utterly captivating and original production.
