Program notes

Discover Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s L'Olimpiade, an opera based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio, set to music by more than sixty composers, including Vivaldi! Its action is particularly complex due to multiple plot twists, but can be summarised as follows: Megacles, Aristea's lover, agrees to fight under the name of his friend Lisidas in the Olympic Games where she is the prize, without his knowledge. The librettist portrays the traditional conflict between love and friendship, a central theme of the best operas…

Stage director Italo Nunziata highlights the complexity of the characters: the psychological relationships of the four heroes, the intensity of their passion, their suffering, and their internal conflicts. In this production, the actors move directly in the middle of the audience, creating an immediate sense of proximity. The stellar cast—Sofia Soloviy in the role of Megacles and Jennifer River as Lisidas among others—rise to the challenge with a remarkable performance, to be discovered without further delay!
