Program notes
This production of Giacomo Puccini’s Il Trittico, directed by Tobias Kratzer at La Monnaie in 2022, marks the theater’s reopening following the pandemic-related closures and stands out for its highly conceptual interpretation of the triptych. The work—comprising the three one-act operas Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi—combines tragedy, mysticism, and comedy all in one evening…
For his second production at La Monnaie, Tobias Kratzer retains the original order of the works while interweaving them to form a continuous narrative, setting them in different media universes: a comic book for Il tabarro, a black-and-white film for Suor Angelica, and a television sitcom for Gianni Schicchi, with visual references creating bridges between the stories. At the helm of a cast drawn from La Monnaie’s extensive artistic family, Alan Altinoglu is the perfect conductor for mastering the formidable challenges of this triptych. He brings out the opera’s distinctive blend of tones, from the somber to the burlesque, ensuring each is fully and vividly realized.
