Program notes
Here's a little gem we've saved just for you: the excellent production of La Fille du Régiment performed at the Royal Opera of Versailles in 2025! In this remarkable staging by Jean-Romain Vesperini, several rising stars of opera do this comic opera by Donizetti, a favorite of 19th century French audiences, justice.
The opera tells the story of Marie, a young vivandière adopted by a French military regiment and destined to marry one of its soldiers. One day, Tonio encounters the regiment. Initially suspected of being a spy, he is saved from a terrible fate by Marie, with whom he immediately falls in love. After enlisting as a soldier so that he can marry the young woman, he learns that she has been promised to a duke... Will the two lovebirds manage to live out their love? Let soprano Gwendoline Blondeel, tenor Patrick Kabongo, mezzo-soprano Éléonore Pancrazi, and other illustrious soloists tell you this story, alongside the French Army Choir and the Choir and Orchestra of the Royal Opera of the Palace of Versailles, conducted by Gaétan Jarry!
