Program notes
Set in 17th-century England during the Civil War and the rise of Oliver Cromwell’s Puritan regime, I Puritani, directed by Vincent Boussard and conducted by Speranza Scappucci, follows the story of Elvira, a young Puritan woman engaged to Arturo, a nobleman loyal to the Stuart cause. On their wedding day, Arturo helps Queen Enrichetta escape by hiding her under the bridal veil, choosing his political duty over love. Believing she has been abandoned, Elvira descends into madness as the conflict rages on.
In this production by Vincent Boussard, the plot unfolds in an elegant and sophisticated visual meditation, where aesthetic refinement underscores the fragility of emotions and the dreamlike quality of the drama. At the helm of the orchestra, Speranza Scappucci demonstrates why she is considered one of the most renowned conductors of her generation on the international stage. Zuzana Marková and Lawrence Brownlee excel in the roles of Elvira and Arturo, brilliantly bringing to life this epic in which individual passion collides with the upheavals of history…
