Program notes

Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Belle Époque Paris alongside Ciboulette, a young market gardener who dreams of a bright future that won't stifle her romantic impulses. Through her eyes, we meet a colorful cast of characters representing all the layers of French society. Who will win Ciboulette's heart? Her neighbor, Madame Pingret, has made a prophecy about this, but it seems so far-fetched...

Although the action takes place in 1867, it is his contemporaries that composer Reynaldo Hahn sets to music in Ciboulette, which his first venture into light opera. On the evening of the premiere, instead of attending the performance, Hahn went to the cinema and was only given a standing ovation when the librettist Francis de Croisset recognized him as he was passing by the entrance of the theater, he was dragged onto the stage to the cheers of the crowd. Let the good humor of this production sweep you away and enjoy a delightful evening at the Opéra-Comique, with Laurence Equilbey on the podium with the brilliant Julie Fuchs in the title role.
