Program notes
A silver spoon goes missing, and the fortunes of a young servant girl are forever altered… Rossini’s La gazza ladra blends comedy and drama in the tale of a simple theft that triggers a fateful chain of events, at the end of which the wrongly accused Ninetta finds herself sentenced to death amid a climate of paranoia and unchecked power.
Written in 1817, this opera semi-seria, whose overture is famous for its drumrolls and one of the most recognizable solos in the oboe repertoire, explores the excesses of a society in crisis. Tobias Kratzer, a stage director renowned throughout Europe, makes his debut in Vienna and sets the story in a context of deep social unrest, where the very idea of a happy ending seems uncertain. The soprano Nino Machaidze proves why she is considered one of the best of her generation; her intense and masterful Ninetta, played with a “steely, defiant edge” (Opera Today), is a standout among a uniformly exceptional cast.
