Program notes
In this master class, celebrated French trombonist Jacques Mauger tackles Zygmunt Stojowski’s Fantaisie, a technically-challenging work written for trombone, bass, and piano, shortly after the Polish composer settled in the United States. Upon hearing this work, one is reminded of Chopin’s lyrical passages—which are much harder to play on the trombone! Mauger focuses here on enhancing expression and direction, two factors that make a great deal of difference in its execution. Known for his success at the Markneukirchen and Toulon international competitions, Mauger studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris before joining the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice and the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris. He now teaches at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris and at the Haute École de Musique (HEMU) in Switzerland while touring as an acclaimed soloist worldwide.
