Program notes

Claude-Paul Taffanel was one for drama: his Grande fantaisie is based on themes from Ambroise Thomas’s opera I, and it is not for the faint of heart! The technical skill required to play Taffanel’s works is why this piece is considered one of the great pieces of flute repertoire. One can hear the operatic drama within the phrases, begging for various tone colors from the flute and flexibility in sound. Davide Formisano demonstrates adjustment of angle and airflow, resulting in different effects and adding to the overall character of the performance. His technical mastery makes Formisano a perfect choice for this master class: he studied with Jean-Claude Gérard and Aurèle Nicolet, and won several major international competitions, including the Jean-Pierre Rampal Competition at age 17. He teaches at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts when not on tour.
