Program notes

Prodigious trumpeter Tom Harrell ignites the Jazz à Junas Festival 2011 with an impressive mastery of atmospheric sounds. A prodigy beginning the trumpet at only 8 years old, he graduated from Stanford with a degree in music composition and has been associated with the greats of the jazz tradition, including Charlie Haden, Woody Herman, and Lee Konitz from a young age. On this occasion, he is accompanied by talented musicians, who honor his music: tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, pianist Danny Grissett, double-bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Johnathan Blake.

His course of life has not been without its difficulties. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia during his career, the musician nevertheless continued to pursue his passion while confronting the illness. Today, he is considered as one of the most talented trumpeters, composers, and flugelhornists of the genre. In this performance, he brilliantly and elegantly displays an irreproachable musicality in his most famous compositions, such as The Time of the Sun and Obsession. Finally, the musicians pay tribute to Miles Davis by performing one of his greatest masterepices: Milestone.
