Program notes

At the 2019 edition of Banlieues Bleues, Sylvain Rifflet reunites with American saxophonist Jon Irabagon for a new show, following their acclaimed celebration of Moondog in 2017. Rather than focusing on a musical figure, they have chosen to explore the theme of rebellion, accompanied by Sébastien Boisseau and Jim Black.

Inspired by influential voices from history and current events—from Olympe de Gouges to Greta Thunberg, from civil rights struggles to climate activism—the two saxophonists translate the power of these voices into music. The concert becomes a hub of experimentation where improvisation, tension, and disruption converge to produce new expressions of resistance and reignite an authentic flame of rebellion through music.
