Program notes
Discover a treasured rarity, one of the few filmed concerts by the Quincy Jones Big Band—recorded in 1960 by Radio Télévision Suisse at the Palais de Beaulieu in Lausanne! Charged with history, this moment marks the beginning of the legendary, decades-spanning career of a true original: "an always powerful swing," notes journalist Jean Landier, "despite the complexity of the arrangement, and a unique palette of timbres thanks to a subtle combination of brasses and reeds."
Jones's concert is followed by a performance by American trumpeter Benny Bailey, recorded at the RTS studios in 1969 with Swiss musicians from the Geo Voumard Trio. A member of the Quincy Jones Big Band, Bailey kicked off his career playing with Jay McShann, Dizzy Gillespie, and Lionel Hampton before moving to Europe and collaborating with more big names like Kenny Clarke, Dexter Gordon, and Stan Getz.
