Program notes
On June 6, 1944, the Allied Forces flew over the shores of Normandy and began the military operation that would liberate Western Europe from Nazi Germany. On the same day across the world in Kingston, Jamaica, the legendary pianist Monty Alexander was born. On the occasion of both the 80th anniversary of D-Day and his own 80th birthday, Alexander, named after British World War II General Bernard Montgomery, released his album D-Day, which is both a celebration of a legendary life in music and a profound meditation on one of the most earth-shaking events in modern history.
In this concert at the Halle aux Grains in Toulouse, France, Alexander is joined by bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Jason Brown for a moving and energetic performance of the album. Listen to hits made popular by beloved wartime entertainers like Frank Sinatra and Charlie Chaplin as well as original works by the master pianist himself, who has turned his own birthday milestone into a gift for his fans and a thoughtful homage to one of the most important days of the 20th century.
