Mario Canonge Trio in Fontenay-sous-Bois

The Mario Canonge Trio perform at Au Comptoir, just outside of Paris, in Fontenay-sous-Bois. Born in the French overseas territory of Martinique, Canonge started playing the piano accompanying church choirs, before moving to Paris in 1979 to study music. The many stylistic influences from all three musicians all come up at different points in the concert, with an emphasis on the rhythmic complexity of latin and caribbean sounds, for which Canonge is known for. The rhythm section, made up of Michel Alibo on bass and Arnaud Dolmen on drums, are completely locked in with one another, a product of considerable time spent playing together. The three musicians bring their different backgrounds and playing styles together, creating a solid foundation on which they can explore all of their improvisational ideas, a truly fusional trio.
