Program notes

Jimmy Smith, the king of keyboard improvisation, left us in 2005, and it is important for us now to shine a light on the massive musical legacy he leaves behind, in the company of another expert in the matter, Lucky Peterson. The electric organ, Smith’s instrument of choice, takes center stage in this program that begins with Stevie Wonder’s 100 Ways.

Lucky Peterson, who passed away in 2020, is surrounded by choice performers: Nicolas Folmer on trumpet, Kelyn Crapp on guitar, and Ahmad Compaoré on drums. On stage at the Banlieues Bleues festival, the improvisation virtuosos explore together the works of Smith, with The Sermon and The Champ, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, and Peterson himself!
