Program notes

Brazilian singer, guitarist and composer João Bosco, allied with his mythical band, infuses Latin jazz filled with light and cheerfulness at the Malta Jazz Festival 2018. A master in the art of fusing styles, João Bosco has built his sonic style on a melting pot of bossa nova, samba and MPB. Here, with guitarist Ricardo Silveira, bassist João Baptista and drummer Kiko Freitas, he introduces us to a brand of Brazilian music sparingly influenced by contemporary jazz.

This engineer and self-taught guitarist, converted in the 60s to Brazilian popular music, made his debut alongside Elis Regina and Aldir Blanc. It is with the title O Bêbado e a Equilibrista in particular—which became an anthem for Amnesty International in 1977—that his notoriety is assured. This concert is also an opportunity for this pioneering artist to expand his audience internationally, which he is gradually achieving, after phenomenal success in his native country.
