Program notes

After his concert at the Leopolis Jazz Fest, virtuoso bassist Étienne Mbappé continues his international tour, once again accompanied by a group of world-class musicians, a band he recruited and formed called The Prophets. Another jam-packed stage and another delighted audience—this time at the Jazzwoche Burghausen, one of the world's biggest jazz festivals since 1970 that has welcomed the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Chick Corea, and Dave Brubeck!

At this iconic festival, Mbappé offers up not only fabulously frenzied instrumental works like Mang Lady and Bandit Queen—but also titles that show off his talents as a singer-songwriter, like Irish Koffi. Focusing mainly on tracks from his 2016 album How Near How Far, Mbappé and the Prophets write a brand-new chapter in an already legendary career that has seen the bassist collaborate with big names like Joe Zawinul, Robben Ford, and even Ray Charles and Bill Evans.
