Program notes

During the 1980s, the English music scene—like the rest of the globe—was electrified by the rise of funk. Soon infused with jazz and soul influences, the genre sparked the emergence of fresh musical directions: acid jazz, smooth jazz, and nu jazz, among others. Incognito quickly established itself as one of the iconic figures of these hybrid styles. Founded in 1979 by guitarist Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and bassist Paul Tubbs Williams, the band asserted its identity from its first album, Jazz Funk, recorded in 1981, and conquered the British stage before going international. Consistently collaborating with young talents who enhance this creative pool, Incognito sets the Jazz à Vienne stage alight in a funky, dance-infused evening under the stars!
