Program notes
Five decades ago, international jazz star Freddie Hubbard set the Berliner Jazztage on fire with his all-star quintet. With Hubbard on trumpet, Rick Zunagar on guitar, Larry Kein on bass, David Garfield on keyboard, and Carlos Vega on drums, the group overflows with talent and groove in this rare concert film from 1977. Hubbard rose to prominence in the 1960s playing alongside Sonny Rollins and Quincy Jones. His singular tone went on to influence the jazz and bebop genres, and he held audiences in the palm of his hand with his dynamic stage presence. Featuring two original works as well as a composition from the renowned jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd, this concert, with its up close cinematography and energetic atmosphere, feels like a front-row ticket to jazz history.
