Program notes
Inspired by English jazz and named in honor of French jazz saxophonist Émile Parisien, young Strasbourg-based band Émile Londonien takes over the Grandes Marées Festival stage for its 2023 edition! Representatives of nu jazz who have been masters in the art of improvisation since the creation of their artist collective in 2015, keyboardist Nils Boyny, bassist Théo Tritsch and drummer Matthieu Drago have one aim: to decompartmentalize genres! Electro, rap, hip-hop, the French touch, Afro-beat: it's an abundance of rhythms and sounds that influence these musicians from a generation that “likes to cross ‘more produced’ music with live improvisation” (Émile Londonien for Ouest France). Drawing inspiration from the palettes of artists such as Yussef Kamaal, Roy Hargrove, Thelonius Monk and Charles Mingus, as well as urban artists Daft Punk, Bugz in the Attics and Kendrick Lamar, Émile Londonien paints the vibrant colors of a deeply personal, contemporary soundscape.
