Program notes

In 1969, to mark Duke Ellington’s 70th birthday, Jazztage invited a true constellation of jazz stars. Among them were Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Lionel Hampton, to name only a few. This concert by Duke Ellington and his orchestra at the Berlin Philharmonie was nonetheless the highlight of that year’s festival.

In this famed venue, accompanied by his legendary ensemble, Ellington displays the full richness of his writing: orchestral power, elegant arrangements, and freedom of expression for the soloists. The program alternates between great standards and iconic pieces from Ellington’s repertoire, including Take the “A” Train, Mood Indigo, and Satin Doll. In Berlin, Ellington confirms his status as a world class composer and bandleader.
