Program notes

American pianist, keyboardist, and composer Chick Corea is one of jazz' most illustrious figures. Since the late sixties, he has not stopped experimenting with a wide variety of musical genres, going from avant-garde jazz, be-bop, jazz fusion, and even classical music, always with great virtuosity and creativity. Corea could often be found performing with other artists at the forefront of music creation such as, Miles Davis, Gary Burton, Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton, Wayne Shorter, and Lee Konitz. His projects as band leader have earned him recognition with a very wide portion of the general public and have earned him no less than 23 Grammy Awards.

During this concert at the Jazz à Vienne festival in France, Corea presents works from his latest album, titled The Vigil, surrounded by a remarkable group that includes Christian McBride on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums. The pianist and his band illuminate the illustrious stage with their trademark funk and improvisations, based on Corea's bright compositions.
