Program notes

The incomparable Cécile McLorin Salvant, called “the finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade” by the New York Times, transports us with her sublime, velvety voice in this unmissable program featuring both jazz standards and Salvant’s own compositions.

The Franco-American jazz vocalist first discovered the genre when she moved to Aix-en-Provence at the age of 18 to study law — and to train as a classical and Baroque vocalist. After hearing her sing at the conservatory, saxophonist Jean-François Bonnel recognized Salvant’s remarkable talent and became her mentor. Her victory at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition in 2010 soon propelled her onto the international jazz scene. As a multi-faceted artist — she is also an author, composer, and illustrator — Salvant has drawn inspiration for her multiple Grammy-winning albums from a diverse range of musical traditions. Salvant’s honeyed voice, vibrant personality, and keen sense of humor make for an unforgettable evening at the renowned SFJAZZ Center!
