Program notes

As part of his “Upswing” series, SFJazz’s artistic director Terence Blanchard welcomes the quartet of “one of jazz's most creative trumpeters,” Avishai Cohen (JazzTimes).

New-York-based musician Avishai Cohen, originally from Israel, first took to the stage at the age of 10 with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra and notable conductors. Although he shares his name with the famous double bassist — he named his first album The Trumpet Player to avoid confusion — his originality and standing on the contemporary jazz scene stem from his unique creativity, musical versatility, and proficient technical command of his instrument. Here with his acclaimed quartet, he presents his 2024 album Ashes to Gold, as well as a piece written by his daughter Amalia, “The Seventh,” which closes the session in high style.
