Program notes
Though the guitar is the world's most popular instrument, few documentaries have been devoted to it, especially in the field of classical music. In A Guitar with a View, legendary documentarist Bruno Monsaingeon paints a rich and fascinating portrait of French classical guitarist Thibaut Garcia, a musician whose incredible talent vaulted him to international acclaim before his thirtieth birthday.
Monsaingeon shows us Garcia's dazzling career arc, from a childhood in Toulouse to a succession of prestigious prizes that brought him early renown. A supreme virtuoso and consummate artist, Garcia discusses his experiences working as a soloist, in a duo with guitarist Antoine Morinière or dancer Aure Wachter (exploring John Dowland's "Flow, my tears"), and as a chamber musician with the Arod Quartet (in the Fandango from Boccherini's D-major Quintet), as well as his interest in lutherie, teaching, and sharing his love for music.
This gorgeously filmed feature includes archival footage of the young Thibaut and never-before-seen performances of works by Albéniz, Barrios, and Brouwer. Also included is Garcia's astonishing silent retreat among the monks of the Abbey of Solesmes in northwest France as he and his closest friend and colleague Antoine Morinière prepare and perform their own remarkable two-guitar transcription of Bach's Goldberg Variations.
