Program notes
Dive into the tumultuous love life of an exceptional composer from the German Romantic period: Johannes Brahms. In this fascinating documentary—exploring the influence of the women in his life on the composition of his greatest works—actors Brian Cox and Jane Lapotaire lend their voices to Brahms and Clara Schumann, whose abundant and passionate correspondence has been largely preserved. To complement these epistolary excerpts, some of the greatest performers of the late twentieth century breathe life into the master’s music. We even hear Brahms himself perform the Hungarian Dance No. 1 in a remarkable recording from 2 December 1889, one of the first ever made!
