Program notes
Delve into the legendary life of one of opera’s greatest ever voices, the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso! From his humble beginnings in Napoli to his rapid rise to stardom, the film retraces the journey of this extraordinary performer. Considered by many as the most iconic singer in the history of opera, Caruso was one of the first voices to ever be recorded. A huge admirer of technology, he was enamoured with the gramophone and made his first ever album in a hotel suite in Milan in 1902. Caruso went on to make 488 albums with the label Victor Talking Machine that would later be known as RCA Victor. His most famous recording is most certainly his version of “Vesti la giubba” from the opera Pagliacci by Leoncavallo—also the first recording to sell more than a million copies worldwide!
If the recording industry owes a lot to the spirit and vision of Enrico Carruso, opera’s popularity during the 20th century and indeed today is, by and large thanks to Carruso’s all encompassing voice and personality. In Enrico Carruso, The Eternal Voice, producer Norbert Busè celebrates the life and career of perhaps the most iconic and recognizable voices of the 20th century in a beautiful homage.
