Program notes

Step into the world of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, one of twentieth century’s most celebrated lyric sopranos. Born in Germany and naturalized as a British citizen, this exceptional artist rose to prominence through her exquisite tone, tireless discipline, exacting artistic standards, and remarkable career marked by outstanding performances across a wide range of roles. Over the course of her forty-year career, she has performed alongside classical music icons including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Herbert von Karajan. Directed by Gérald Caillat in 1995, a decade before Schwarzkopf’s death, this documentary traces her illustrious career using television archives spanning from the 1930s to the 1980s, offering a valuable resource for (re)discovering this operatic singing legend.
