Orchestre de la Suisse Romande

Program notes

Violinists, horn players, bassoonists; countless young musicians from the greatest European music schools dream of one day joining the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. If the orchestra recruits them, the sky's the limit to their joy. Go behind the scenes of the auditions. Suspense, disappointment, joy... A whole range of emotions plays out in this report that is sure to get your heart racing.

Founded in 1918 by Ernest Ansermet, who was the conductor until 1967, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande has 112 permanent musicians. It performs its subscription concerts in Geneva and Lausanne, symphony concerts of the City of Geneva, the annual concert for the United Nations and opera performances at Geneva’s Grand Theatre. It has built its reputation over the years thanks to its historical classical music recordings and performances of the French and Russian repertoire of the 20e century.

In January 2015, British conductor Jonathan Nott was appointed Artistic and Musical Director. His principal guest conductor is Japanese maestro Kazuki Yamada.
