Program notes
A great friend and close collaborator of Gustav Mahler, renowned pianist and conductor Bruno Walter has championed Germanic music throughout his almost 70-year-long career. From Munich to Vienna, via Berlin, he was entrusted with the musical direction of the world's most prestigious orchestras, before the war forced him into exile in France, and then the USA, where he became principal musical advisor to the New York Philharmonic, and conducted at the Met Opera. Still regarded today as the finest interpreter of Mahler's music, it was watching Hans von Bülow conduct an orchestra that inspired a young Bruno to take up the baton. Join the director of this documentary, János Darvas, and Michele Selvini, author of Bruno Walter's biography—La Porta Dell'Eternità—in the discovery of this essential figure of classical music!
