Program notes

In 2006, the Mozart22 project took place in honor of the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. It was a major project to recreate the twenty-two operas and oratorios composed by Mozart. This documentary goes behind the scenes of the production of Ascanio in Alba at that time.

The Salzburg Festival of 2006 gathered the best specialists of the Mozart repertoire - singers, conductors and directors - to interpret this unique selection of works.

This documentary decrypts opera composition and its context: are interviewed director David Hermann, alongside Christof Hetzer in charge of costumes. We also discover the rich testimonies of remarkable singers of this production: Sonia Prima singing the role of Ascanio and Marie-Belle Sandis playing Silvia Diana Damrau.

The stage is set in a fascinating small puppet theater. Bastien and Bastienne, the young shepherdess Bastienne is afraid of being hurt in love. On the advice of the magician Colas, Bastienne begins to feign indifference to any love at all. It becomes feared that Bastienne's heart has been taken. Between games of seduction and intrigue, the characters are brought to life thanks to the great interpretation of singers and mastery puppet movements.
