Program notes
Canadian star conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin continues his epic concert cycle of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen with the world-class Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, now taking on the tetralogy's third chapter Siegfried alongside a cast of Wagnerian experts! In this pivotal volume that picks up a few years after Die Walküre, we follow Siegfried, son of Siegmund and Sieglinde, as he vanquishes the dragon Fafner, retrieves the Ring, and awakens the Valkyrie Brünnhilde from her enchanted sleep. With Yannick and the Rotterdam Phil bringing out every nuance in Wagner's monumental score, American heldentenor Clay Hilley shines in "the most challenging tenor role in opera literature, which only about a handful of singers worldwide can master with bravura. Hilley proved to be one of them … always [remaining] melodious, never having to press a note and skillfully avoiding any shouting — a singer-actor par excellence" (Das Opernmagazin).
