Program notes
Where do our sonic memories come from? How do our oral traditions shape our lives? These are the questions the Vincent Sauve Trio explores in their ambitious new album La mémoire du son (“the memory of sound”). Renowned drummer and composer Vincent Sauve and his frequent collaborators, saxophonist Sol Léna-Schroll and pianist Clément Merienne, invite us into an intimate, immersive concert experience alongside flutist Magic Malik—a veritable staple of the French jazz scene—and rising star keyboardist Maïlys Maronne.
Sauve’s unique style is rooted in sonic cues and aleatoric principles: active listening guides both improvisation and structure, as the performers respond to one another in real time, building the musical experience collaboratively. As Jazz Magazine wrote, the album is an exercice in musical “criss-crossing,” as "the trio and their special guests observe, watch, and listen to one another, reacting or following, coming together or diverging.” In this ever-shifting interplay, sound becomes a shared act of discovery.
