Program notes

#mediciverbier10 – Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony and former Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Michael Tilson Thomas is famed for his eclectic programmes, cleverly placing modern composers’ music alongside core classical repertoire.

In this exciting programme with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, Michael Tilson Thomas conducts John Cage’s The Seasons, the first piece the maverick composer wrote for orchestra and also the first one to use his “gamut” technique. He is then joined by violinist Christian Tetzlaff for György Ligeti’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. After the interval, the conductor affectionately known as MTT leads a performance of one of the most popular symphonies, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6.
