Generously supported by Madame Aline Foriel-Destezet
The Verbier Festival has long delighted in the vocal versatility of Thomas Quasthoff, traveling effortlessly between lieder, sacred music, and jazz—his distinctive, exquisite baritone has enchanted festival attendees across a wide variety of repertoire. This evening, sit back and marvel at the depth and power of one of the most unique and multifaceted voices the festival has known!
First up, Quasthoff performs Schubert's gorgeous song cycle Die schöne Müllerin (The Lovely Maid of the Mill), an achievement on par with the Winterreise, followed by other melodies like Brahms's Lieder und Gesänge and Schumann's Schön Hedwig. The program continues with the Bach cantata Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen and more sacred music favorites, including the opening aria from Brahms's A German Requiem. Finally, witness a benchmark moment in Quasthoff's illustrious career—his exceptional conducting debut in Bach's Saint Matthew Passion—and discover his skill as a teacher in a master class with two young, up-and-coming singers.
