Gianandrea Noseda conducts Chopin and Mahler — With Mikhaïl Pletnev

Experience a meeting of great musical minds with conductor Gianandrea Noseda and pianist Mikhail Pletnev at the 2026 Verbier Festival. The first part of the concert is dedicated to one of Pletnev's favorite composers, Chopin, and his haunting Piano Concerto No. 2, a youthful work influenced by the composer's love for soprano Konstancja Gładkowska. Though the orchestra is afforded a long introduction, Chopin's writing positions it less as a participant in a dialogue than as a way to enhance and exalt the timbre and harmony of his beloved piano; Pletnev's own reorchestration, performed here, rounds out the fullness and texture of the ensemble. The Verbier Festival Orchestra then sets its sights on Mahler's "Tragic" Symphony No. 6, perhaps the most tormented and devastating of the composer's incredible symphonic corpus, darkly colored under the impending blows of fate struck by the famous "Mahler hammer" in the final movement.
